On Deck, Lower Away

Sadly only a few days left on the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry. Tomorrow I am going back home to Hampton! Before I tell you about my plans for the remainder of my senior project let me recap this amazing day for you! I started the morning off with of course one of Holly’s smoothies and a crew muster in the mess. Then I jumped into some photography of the engine room and the crew working, specifically Jamie and Josh. Then I helped Josh strip the paint off of the cap rail which was very satisfying. We striped the paint off with a scrapper for a while but I was not complaining because it was so fun in my opinion! We also had three Met student interns come aboard today so they also helped strip and sand the cap rail.

After lunch I got ready to go up in the rig. Since I’m the smallest body on the boat I get to do the “fun” jobs aka the lowkey scary ones. I climbed up the mainmast and transferred onto the main course yard where I secured myself into the bosun's chair (with the help of Holly of course). Although I wasn’t feeling nervous about this task, the idea of dangling from a wooden plank was slightly intimidating. But I was clipped in and very secure. Down below, on deck Jamie was controlling the halyard and we had to communicate to each other when I needed to be lowered and stopped at my next stopping point. What I was doing was using fluid film to slush the mainstay. This task took about an hour but some really cool pictures were the result. At the end of the day we hosted an event with the URI marine affairs department. There were students, faculty, and DONUT CAKE! I had never heard of this before today but it has changed my life. Anyways I’m gonna be heading home tomorrow because Friday my mom is graduating from graduate school! Even though I’m not gonna be working that day I’m so excited for her! Love u mom<3 That's all for tonight. (Total Hours: 77.5 Today: 8.5)
