Busy Day on Deck!

Another day on the job! This morning I woke up, showered, and got out of my cabin to grab my mug for another one of Holly's amazing smoothies (I think it's gonna turn into an every morning breakfast necessity). After our crews morning muster I checked off all of the things I have to know on my Day one familiarization sheet which was really exciting! It’s crazy to think that I am already on day three of being aboard OHP and I know so much about the boat! By the time Holly and I finished going over my sheet three of our student interns had arrived who come aboard Wednesdays and Fridays from the MET School. Since they have been interning for a while they walked me through their boat check where we did things like check bilges and record information from the machinery in the engine room. They also showed me the steps for pumping out gray and black water which we did today. While the water was pumping out we went over how to use the climbing harnesses for when I get to go aloft to help with rigging which I am SO excited about. We did a basic tutorial and clipped onto the shrouds to get a feel for it. After wearing the harnesses and getting a little practice in I took inventory on all of the 3 and 5 point harnesses which is something that has to be done monthly on the ship. Along with checking all of the harnesses I updated the spreadsheet for this task, reorganized the 3 point harnesses to be stored away in the lazaret, and tested all of the general alarms that are scattered throughout the boat with a few of my shipmates.
After the Met students left and I finished all my tasks I helped Josh out by rust busting for him because he is re painting the forward scuttle. We talked about life and working on boats and it was really fun getting to know more about him. I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the crew the past few days and I can’t wait to learn more about them! After helping with Josh we had to do our end of day cleaning. I love cleaning (on boats) so this got me excited! I swept probably 7 piles of dust and other stuff up from our hallway below deck and in our library. I also helped clean the galley, which included washing and drying a few dishes. Then we had an end of day muster with our Captain and after work Holly and I jammed out on our ukuleles together which was very fun! I’m currently writing this blog on deck back aft and the view is so pretty! Until tomorrow! (todays hours: 8.5 total 26.5)
