Forepeak open!!!!!! (First FULL Day)

Today I woke up to the sun pouring through my port hole and the swaying of the boat. The wind was still blowing hard! I jumped out of my bunk excited for my first full day, threw on my work clothes, and got ready for the busy day ahead. By 0800 Holly and I were in the galley as she prepared some amazing blueberry and banana smoothies for us! By 0815 the crew met in the mess for our morning must where we talked about the plan for the day. After that I spent an hour and a half going through the boat to learn about all of the safety basics which was a lot for my brain! By the time our safety tour was done we had our first educational program on the ship for the day! The first student program was from The MET school which is the school that partners with Proctor’s Winter Ocean Classroom! While the students were on board today's program focused on what to do if there was a fire. We did a real life scenario which meant that I had to learn my station bill. At first I thought that my job would just be to exit the boat and muster on the dock with the students  but our second mate gave me an actual role which really surprised me! My job if there were to be a fire is to help evacuate everyone off of the boat, gather radios for the crew to communicate with each other, and be ready to jump in anywhere. We did the drill and it went really well! Once the drill was done it was time for the MET students to leave and for our crew to muster with our Captain, Jonathan Kabak.

Our next program would be coming on the boat for two hours and were a group of 9 middle school students. With these students we had different stations with activities. Some of which including Marine Electrician class where the students made bracelets out of the ships scrap electrical wire, crimp connectors, and heat shrink. We also had an activity on buoyancy and a mini electrical model of the ship that can actually pump bilges and turn lights on. After that program our day was finally done! Throughout the day I also brought out my camera to take some pictures of the classes and the boat! Part of my senior project is photography and I am super excited to capture what it's like to work and live on a tall ship! Although my day was exhausting it was definitely a rewarding experience watching all of the students enjoy their time on the boat and I can’t wait for more educational programs. (Todays hours: 9.5 & total is 18)
