Solo Watch Day
I started the day off by relieving Josh as the DWS (duty watch stander) and I took the responsibility over the ship for the day. This was something I was very excited about and ready to do! It was my first time ever doing a solo watch and I had so much fun with it. Although I still am on watch until I get relieved tomorrow morning my day was filled with all of the fun watch person duties. I headed on deck to do a walk around of the ship and spent some time taking pictures with my camera. The weather was really good this morning so the lighting was great and I captured some good pics. After that I headed down to the tween deck to check in with Holly. She suddenly told me I would be learning how to drive our white boat which is roughly 15 ft and a center console. I headed to the floating docks with Luke where the white boat and rescue boat are tied up. I started her up, drove around OHP, and cruised for a little with Luke. Normally I’m used to driving small boats that have an outboard and a tiller with a different throttle system but this was a fun change. Luke helped me with my small boat skills by having me practice turning, shifting from forward, neutral, reverse, and parked her. It was really fun and so nice to be out on the water.
Once I was done in the small boat, I helped Holly develop the ship's curriculum for high school chemistry. We are trying to bring state standards into the everyday work on the ship for alternative ways to learn the subject matter. For example I thought about chemical changes and what that would look like on the boat. One instance of chemical change is rusting which is very common on boats, especially steel. I thought about how rust busting on the boat could be a good way to show students what it looks like when iron reacts with the saltwater from the ocean and oxygen. This forms iron oxide or rust. That was just one example of the type of work we were doing. To end the day I got to go aloft again which was awesome! We climbed up the Main mast to the main topsail where we tidied up the sail and further familiarized myself with the rig. Overall it was a really fun day! (hours today: i'm still on watch until I am relieved tomorrow morning soooo a lot! Total: > 50)
