Sunday Reflection!
This week I learned a lot! Working on boats there is always something to do and something to learn. During my first week I have already learned a lot more about different maintenance projects/tools and also how educational programs run on the boat! I have adapted a good familiarization with the inner workings of the boat and where things are located. This is a good skill that I have acquired because it will benefit me tomorrow when I have my solo watch day. From roughly 0815 till the next morning at 0815, the responsibility of OHP is in my hands. I will be setting the flags, doing the boat check, and engine room check by myself. This first week will definitely benefit me a lot tomorrow as I step into this role for the first time.
So far I’ve really enjoyed my project and working on the boat. This project is up my alley so I knew from the start that I would enjoy anything I’m asked to do! When it comes to living and working on boats I’m pretty open minded about trying new tasks since there is so much for me to learn! Having the ability to be on the boat as part of the crew has given me a whole new perspective compared to when I was on ocean as a student. This was one thing that was different for me as I transitioned onto the boat. At first I didn’t think this shift would be noticeable, but for me it felt weird being the person students come to when they have questions or explaining certain things. Although I still consider myself a student since I am constantly learning from my crew this was one aspect that surprised me. With a good size crew that varies in all ages I have realized that everyone is egger to learn. Whether you're in your early twenties or sixties. The environment on tall ships encourages learning for everyone aboard and this makes the experience so much more valuable. It's something that I forgot about after ocean but now cherish so much during my senior project. Another thing that will benefit me from this week's activities is my photography on the boat. This first week allowed me to see the flow of each day and where photography fits into play. Now that I have been capturing photos for a week I can focus on other aspects of the boat that I want to photograph like the engine room and maintenance work. This will help me further achieve my goal of incorporating photography with the work that I do on the boat. Overall, I have loved every minute of my senior project thus far and can’t wait to jump into this week. I have already fully completed two of my goals which were focused on learning more about the inner working of OHP (this includes completing a full week of vessel familiarization, complete safety training required of the vessel, go through a harness safety training, and stand a full day of watch, which I am doing tomorrow) and being able to help with educational programs for high school students on OHP. I can’t wait to share more about my senior project and end the week with a bang. (total hours 48)

Some really great thoughts and insights in this post. I think it is so important that you hold onto that idea of being a learner-teacher-mentor while on the ship and once you get off of it. Sounds like such an important fit for you as you can apply this is in so many places. Being open-minded to both learner and sharing your own bits of wisdom and advice is such a great way for you to be a leader and remain humble in the presence of others. Keep up that good work, I'm really enjoying reading your posts!
